Litany for Survival

Amadou Diallo, 22, was killed by police at his home in the Bronx borough of New York on Feb. 4, 1999. A jury on Friday acquitted four New York City police officers of all murder and manslaughter charges

Mark your calendars now and spread the word.

On March 25, 1-4 p.m., at the Lafayette Avenue Church
(85 South Oxford at the corner of Lafayette and South Oxford) in the Fort Greene section of Brooklyn, poets will read in memory of Amadou Diallo. The poets who will read are:

Suheir Hammad (Drops of this Story and Born Palestinian, Born Black)
Tony Medina (In Defense of Mumia and No Noose is Good Noose)
Tracie Morris (Intermission),
Willie Perdomo (Where a Nickel Costs a Dime)
Carl Hancock Rux (Rux Revue and Pagan Operetta)
Patricia Spears Jones (The Weather that Kills)

Carl Hancock Rux will read original "Diallo" poems. Patricia Spears Jones will read June Jordan's "I Must Be a Menace to My Enemy" and "A Litany for Survival" by Audre Lorde.

Members of the audience will be invited to share poems of survival and questions and answers will end the event.

"Litany for Survival" is a free public event sponsored by ANANSI: Fiction of the African Diaspora and Lafayette Avenue Presbyterian Church. The Emancipation Proclamation was signed at the church. Frederick Douglass spoke in the sanctuary. The Audre Lorde Project operates out of the church, which as an impressive mural reflecting the community on the sanctuary's ceiling.

This event is free and open to the public.
