The 2nd Annual Up South International Book Festival Brings the Renaissance Back to Harlem: September 19 -23, 2007

Featuring Common, Sonia Sanchez, Martha Southgate, Simon Schmama, Faith Ringgold, Amiri Baraka, Jason Moran, and more …

New York, NY, July 16, 2007 -- Not since the Harlem Renaissance reigned supreme has Harlem featured such a hotbed of artistic excellence. Now in its second year, the Up South International Book Festival (USIBF) is bringing together an international cast of writers, poets, dancers, musicians, and
filmmakers, to celebrate the craft of storytelling by artists of color from the world over.

Presented at Harlem Stage on 135th street, The Up South Book Festival will feature five days of music, author readings, panel discussions, film screenings and dance performances, presented by some of the most talented names in the arts, beginning on September 19, 2007. Common, Amiri Baraka, Sonia Sanchez, Linton Kwesi Johnson, Jason Moran and Martha Southgate, are just a handful of confirmed participants. And for the first time, a full day of children’s programming will be included in the festival program.

“The common thread that binds all of the artists and thinkers we invite to the Festival is talent,” says USIBF founder and senior editor at Atria Books, Malaika Adero. “Our goal is to shine a brilliant spotlight on these talented artists who often don’t get the recognition they deserve in today’s cultural marketplace,” Adero says. “ My wish is that Up South will inspire as well as provide enjoyment to all those who attend the festival.”

Up South is a curated book festival. In other words, each of the authors has been carefully selected as a participant because of his or her artistic talent for writing fine literature. These authors are the one’s who transport their readers to worlds both distant and near and who touch our heartstrings with their craft and insight into the human condition. Up South believes in the connectivity of the arts and for that reason, music, dance and film events are part of the festival. Up South is the opportunity to participate in a total artistic experience.

Up South Incorporated celebrates literary and artistic work by established and emerging international artists of color particularly those underrepresented in mainstream media. Its annual Up South Festival presents the best in contemporary literature, film, dance, music and performance art, to stimulate dialogue about art and culture, to provide exposure and attention to artists of color internationally, and to expand the audiences for their work.
