African-American Pavilion at BookExpo America
African American publishers have historically been the vehicle to bring black
stories to the community. Our stories have been sad, mad and glad, but they were
told through partnerships and coordinated efforts to bring our culture to the
forefront against a backdrop of resistance. Over 50 years of publishing, has
come together in one shared vision
the African American Pavilion at BookExpo.
BookExpo America has traditionally been the showcase for the publishing industry
and every category, from Hispanic to children, provided a unified presence each
year. African American titles consistently left a silent void year after year.
Yet, a shared goal and collective voice have filled this void.
The first ever African American Pavilion at BookExpo America,
began in 2004 as a coordinated effort by
Genesis Press,
Amber Communications Group
and Black Issues Book Review.
The mission was to make the leading industry event for book publishers a more
cost effective and efficient media to present and sell black titles.
A three booth pavilion quickly became a consorted effort of over
15 exhibitors to create the African American culture of book publishing. These
Publishers are independently owned and operate and generate million of dollars
in book sales. Thus, African American pavilion stands for more than just a
united face of publishers, but the voice and power of black book publishing.
